You'll only be able to run for 30 days without activating.

Your title sucks, and you sound like you're trying to pirate Windows. Out of curiosity, what is your native language?

Are you using an official disc to install Windows XP? Have you modified the install in any way that makes activation unnecessary?

well because you're basically admitting to piracy and you're using the spammer's avatar you apparently might not be around here as long as you think

I assumed that since you didn't counter n0cmonkey's suggestion, you have not paid for the software. If you have, please say so.

If it was an official disc, and didn't make you activate, then you have nothing to worry about. If it's a burned disc, then there might be issues.

There is volume licensing, which is extremely expensive. Mostly purchased by corporations for the workstations. There is also illegal pirated copies that are called "corporate edition." I think some of the CD keys that made it to the net are blocked, but not many.

and what is a spammer's avatar

The avatar you are using (the black dude) is used by most of the spammers that visit this little corner of the net.

and what did he mean i might not be around here long

Piracy isn't acceptable around here, so if you're trying to get help with pirated whatever, you might get banned.

Hey, I don't mean to be nasty or anything. It's just that when people with low post counts and that avatar ask about unconventional licensing situations there's a pretty good chance the question is about pirated software.

If you can demonstrate that "your friend" paid for it then folks'll be more than willing to help. If not, it looks a bit too fishy.

I don't care whether it's pirated or not. If he says it's legit, I'll play along until there is sufficient evidence otherwise. And not knowing about the particular disc isn't sufficient, IMO. :p

The avatar doesn't really matter. If you like it, use it. You can change that in the profile though (button near the top right hand side of the screen).

Certainly nothing is wrong with using that avatar. I was just pointing out how certain types frequently do use it (and not by specific choice, of course).

As for evidence, the switch from "if i have a copy of xp" and "i have been running on it for about 5 months now" to "its not my computer" and "i dont know if he paid for it or not" is odd. Of course it could very well be true, but if it were me, I would have made a bit of a speech about "I know it looks suspicious, but I honestly don't know where the disc came from. I am not trying to pirate".
