Never heard of any of them other then Oakenfold so I would say none of the others are mainstream.

They're mainstream in the genre, similar to the rappers I mentioned. DJ Tiesto is to DJ Doboy what 2Pac is to Lil' Wayne. Most people who are fans of the genre have heard of both, but 2Pac is obviously much more mainstream.

Some people don't care enough to listen to anything other than what they hear on the radio or see on MTV. So what?
Or is this just about you having a sense of superiority for listening to non-mainstream stuff?

Well, first of all Vocal trance isn't really something you hear on the radio anyways....if you listen to it odds are you are around many other DJ's besides the main ones. As I clarified in OP, I wasn't annoyed because he didn't listen to non-mainstream stuff (I hate people who think they're special because they "rage against the machine" coughgothscough), I was annoyed because he was acting like an expert on vocal trance when it became apparent that he had little knowledge of anything besides the most famous DJ's.

Umm, what does that have to do with goths? Not much. Let's not start stereotyping here.

This is so very true:thumbsup:

Personally, when I was younger I cared ALOT about music and its diversity. I remember getting all excited when I found the underground stuff before everyone else and introduced them to it. I spent countless hours in music stores all over town shuffling through LP's (and later on CD's of course) looking for "the good stuff."

Nowadays, not so much. I dont have time, and it just doesnt have the same appeal as it once did.

I never knock people's musical tastes

Just quoting for fun.

Anyways, I find nothing wrong about liking mainstream music. Hell, I can hardly name non-mainstream anyone in any genre - my radio station is locked into sports talk radio. Friends used to list off their favorite albums, or songs of the week in their aim profiles, and I was lucky to recognize one in the list. Whatever.

It's also like once with friends talking about their favorite movies, when I was asked, I said Field of Dreams and Shawshank Redemption. And they made fun of me. I don't care. The question was, "What are your favorite movies?" not "What are your favorite movies that are not the mainstream hits everyone knows and likes?" If I were asked that now, I might include The Godfather & Goodfellas. Still mainstream, but they're still very good.

Are you upset because he doesn't like the DJs you like, or because he doesn't know about the DJs you like?

That kind of reminds me of the guys in HS would would listen to Ska and Punk, and call other people posers and fake because they didn't.
This was pre-emo, but very close.
If you asked me my favorites, I would name off mainstream bands, because that's all I know, because I honestly don't give a good god damn about Ska or Punk..lol.

BAN

A better question when trying to see if someone is a poseur is to ask them which 5 are their least favorites.

It's very possible to have no personal taste in music... like me.

I never really latched on to a particular band and I don't listen to much music because of the music nowadays stinks, IMO. I usually do listen to classic rock though from the 70s and 80s, and I have a few bands/artists I prefer, but no outright favorites.

That's more of a legit complaint then. I certainly wouldn't claim to be an expert on that scene, but I've heard of all the people you listed (the only one I actually have is Oakenfold, though, but I have some Digweed because a friend gave it to me).

thank you sir for that contribution

np.

But after reading more of the thread, I have decided you are not an idiot 😉 Well, not so much.

Acting like an authority when you know of little/nothing outside mainstream is stupid, but only liking mainstream is not a bad thing. Usually it's mainstream for a reason, and that reason is lots of people like it, so yes, you can be a mainstream fanboy.

EDIT for clarity: this person was trying to act like he knew everything there is to know about vocal trance music, which is why I was surprised to hear that he liked only bigtime well-known DJ's. The fact that he was talking like he was an expert is what annoyed me, not that he doesn't listen to more obscure stuff....I don't care about that.

You're arguing about taste when you listen to trance?

rofl.😕

this thread is a joke right?

you like "trance DJ's" and you're questioning whether OTHER people have good taste in music? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
