Is it possible two connect 2 PCs with a patch cable?

I have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard that has two ethernet ports on it. I was wondering if it's possible to connect to another PC with a regular patch cable (not a crossover). I lent my crossover to a friend for the weekend, and now I just have a regular patch cable. See, I mainly use it to connect my Xbox to my PC to play on XBConnect.

Anyway, I thought it would be interesting if there was a way to configure one of my ethernet ports to switch around the way it reads the wires (ie: do the switching the crossover or a switch would do). Maybe there's a program that'll change the way the NIC sends/receives info?

If there's no way to do this, why don't NIC makers include an option like this? I mean, really, all they would have to do is switch the receive/send ports (ie: change wires 1 & 2 to 3 & 6, and vice versa)

Anyway, thanks for looking, and I'd appreciate any input on this subject.

EDIT: I just noticed that there is a 'software cable detect' option on the 3COM ethernet port, not the NVIDIA one. Only problem with that is I registered the MAC address on the 3COM port for my school's network, so I won't have internet access if I use that port.... I'm gonna check and see if I can register a second MAC, but if I can't, is there a way to make the NVIDIA port 'clone' the MAC of the 3COM port?

Thanks again

I looked at that site, and it seems to be all about wireless connections. This doesn't help me, cause I'm trying to make a wired connection with a patch cable to my Xbox. The 3COM ethernet port on my motherboard does have a 'cable select' option that will let me use the patch cable between PCs, but this is currently the port I registered with my college for internet access.

I emailed them asking if I can switch my registeredd port to the NVIDIA one, but for now, it looks like I'll have to do without Halo online.

Oh well.

Thanks anyway ^_^

From what I've heard you have to use a cross over cable to make it work. Doesn't seem to be any other way.
