Is it possible to use a series of wireless cards to extend connection distances?

This is probably a dumb question, but its something I was wondering about. Say I had a wireless router, and at the edge of its stable connection distance, I place a laptop. Can I use that laptop as a gateway? So then I could access the internet or whatever, using a 2nd laptop that was in distance to the 1st, but not the router.

Do do so you need a Repeater (Range Extender).

A regulat NIC does not have the firmware to act as a Repeater, it is Hard configured as a Wireless client.
