is it possible to use 2 psu's for one system if you run out of connectors?

i'm not in this situation, as my corsair 620w modular psu will last me a long time, but i was wondering if this is possible.

lets say you have a psu that only has 1 6pin pci-e connector and you upgrade to a video card that needs 2, or run SLI.
can you have another psu power that second requirement?

or if you simply ran out of molex connectors.

if so, how would you toggle that psu on when powering the system on?

Yes you can, but most PSUs require a minimum load on the various voltage rails. Some companies sell a T connector for the ATX 20/24pin connector, which should send the power on signal to the PSUs, or you can just use the jumper technique when you want to turn on the other PSU, and possibly use some sort of resistors as a dumby load. In the end, it is usually easier and possibly cheaper to just buy a single PSU capable of fulfilling yoru needs.

I've used dual power supplies for a system before. The primary PSU was powering the mobo, critical fans, video card, and the boot hard drive. The secondary PSU was running the other fans (case has 15 fans), other hard drives, and misc equipment. I wouldn't power a single piece of equipment with two power supplies though.

If you run out of connectors on the PSU chances are your system may need more then what that PSU can offer. But its best to have one solid PSU to run the whole system.
