Don't bother. Get a new bike. If you have a good frame to work with you can upgrade a bike to your heart's content.

hey its good to me :)
I don't know much about them really :) I just know that with a good frame you can do a lot, though I don't know how good a "good frame" would be before you started bothering.

Yup, buy a new bike. 10 years old? Even if you really tried to update it it wouldn't work anyway. The parts won't fit.

Go to your local bike store and buy a $250 last-year's model Gary Fisher or Trek bike. It'll be at least 5 times better than your Huffy.

Oh OK. I read "gear" as "year". :p Anyways, the parts still won't fit most likely. Huffys are not made to be upgraded generally. Plus they're heavy as hell.

I second the motion to get a last year's model Trek or something.

ten gears?

Man, you cant upgrade THAT. You are asking what it would take to make a Yugo work like an M3 for practical purposes.

Take the advice of jumpr.

Or, spend a thousand on parts that wont fit properly on a 20 dollar frame, and wont work half as well as a result. Otherwise ride it as it is, because you are throwing money away.

Your choice though.

You pick.

Buy a new chain, some degreaser and a cleaning brush, some oil, and maybe some new tires. If you only ride in the city, then get slick tires. You may need a chainbreaker too, unless a friend has one.

Other than that, no, you can't really do much with $50.

1) Replacing the chain regularly reduces wear and tear on the cogs.
2) Clean the bike with degreaser on a rag, and brush off the dirt. Then re-oil the parts
3) If you ride only in the city going from knobbies to slicks for the tires is a HUGE upgrade (and relatively cheap).

Or else just take your bike into the store for an overhaul, complete with new chain and perhaps new brake and shifter cables, for $50+, and worry about the tires later.

It's funny that Eug read it was 10 years old. I did the first time as well, which is why i said "get a new bike". I'm glad I'm not the only one with dylsexia :D
