Is it possible to upgrade the processor in Dell's 4000 and/or 5000e series notebook's?

I'm considering either a 4000 or 5000e Dell notebook.
I'd like to get the computer with a Celeron 600 and upgrade later to a fast PIII when the prices come to reality. Since both the Celeron 600 and PIII600 both use 100Mhz bus it might be possible to upgrade either to a faster PIII.

Does anyone know if this is possible? That is to upgrade either Celeron 600 and/or PII600.
 
Hold on...aren't the mobile Celerons on a 100 MHz FSB? I think I remember hearing about a 450 MHz mobile Celeron, and there's no sane way to get that off of a 66 MHz FSB.

But to answer your question, I'd be doubtful. The processors used in notebooks are a much different physical design than desktop processors. You'd have to find a mobile PIII 600E, which won't be easy to do. Even then, there's a good chance it wouldn't work, depending on how the notebook is setup inside.
 
Mobile Celerons DO use 100MHz FSB. I am guessing they use the same pinout as the mobile P3, but you might want to check the tech specs for them.
 
Usually notebook CPU's aren't plugged into the motherboard. They are soldered on and they don't really come off. However, if you bought an EXTREMELY generic notebook that has slots and everything you might be able to do it. Dell notebooks probably don't come apart that easily, and the CPU will probably be soldered on.
 
Yes, the new mobile celerons do in fact utilize the 100mhz fsb. They use different packaging though, either Micro PGA or BGA. I do not know if the processors are upgradeable. However, I have seen mobile p3 processors for sale, so I would assume that upgradibilty is dependent upon the motherboard.
 
Dell notebooks are very nice in that you can actually take out almost everything and replace it, including the video module, assuming that there is something to upgrade it with.

Yes, I know that in the picture is a 5000 not a 5000e but they are almost exactly the same. I think the 5000e just has better video.
