Is it possible to transfer an old harddrive to a new computer without Windows messing up?

Anyone have any idea to transplant a harddrive from one computer to another without meeting tons of driver conflicts and blue screens of death and not having to reinstall Windows? Windows 98 didn't seem to have a problem with this, but XP does.

I think it really depends on the hardware that you are using. If the hardware is the same or nearly the same, then there would be less problems, but if there are lots of driver conflicts, the system will inevitably need to be reinstalled. Just my 2c.
