Is it possible to teach yourself how to play the guitar?

Of course.
If you can teach yourself you will probably end up being a much better player than if you took lessons.
However, you will need lessons in technique to get over the hump from being OK to being GOOD. 🙂

no not possible. no one has ever done it. give up now.

p.s. like everybody is saying, you would be surprised how few chords you need to play a lot of songs

The majority of good guitar players (famous or not) are all self-taught. This is specific to guitars though.

yes

if you can play an E, Em, G, C, D, A, Am, you've covered about 95% of the songs on your "alternative rock" station.

Don't forget "F". 🙂

i have trouble holding down 2 strings with one finger so the xx3211 pwns me 🙁

alternative rock doesn't use C#m, Dm, G#m, or B? 😕

But Christian songs do, and that's why I learned; to lead a worship team

I have been teaching myself for the last two years and I have the mechanics down but I have hit a brick wall on theory. You will need a teacher or class at some point unless you are disciplined enough to teach yourself music theory (it's possible). Taking a few lessons early is also a good idea to nip bad habits in the bud.

You forgot Bm.

Nope, can't be done. In fact the guy who made the first guitar just sat there scratching his ass with a dumb look on his face like, "What the hell do I do with this thing?" Eventually he got pissed off because it wasn't tall enough to be a coffee table, and not heavy enough to be a doorstop, so he pitched it in a river. A midget tried to use it for a canoe, sunk the thing and drowned, and no one after that has ever even heard of a guitar. What am I talking about?

I recomend getting a book or looking up on-line the proper way to hold/place your hand and fingers around neck and fretboard- if you teach yourself bad habits, they're really difficult to break (I'm self-taught and have some bad habits- it by no means prevents me from playing, but I could be better without them).

yes it is very possible...but liek some one said above at some point you are probably going to need lessons on technique...and most ppl probably should anyway. Thats how it was for me too i only got so far until i need some lessons in regards to technique..once that was done so many things about playing got easier

You know, my guitar came with a great DVD that taught some basics and good habits. That's one of the things I've recently found out -- I have some bad habits I've taught myself over the years that have been a bit of a stumbling block for me. Even now that I've learned the proper techniques, my bad habits are hard to break.
