There is a thread in the Ars Technica forums that explains how to set up Ghostscript and RedMon to set up a printer that writes pdf files. I've set it up and it works just great. You'll have to search:
There is a much cheaper alternative to Acrobat called Win2PDF. Its only 50 bucks or so compared to 400 for Acrobat. They have a demo that you can download that inserts a nag page at the end of each page you generate.
