Is it possible to run HDMI video and component audio at the same time on PS3?

have a buddy who just got a PS3 and a new 40" LCDTV. His money resources are tapped out and he has a vintage dolby DTS receiver that doesnt have optical input.

He would like to output the video via HDMI to the TV and component or composite audio to the receiver while he saves up for a better receiver.

Is this possible?

His new TV not have composite audio out? I haven't seen one that doesn't in quite a while.

Honestly not sure if that setup works or not, I'll try and check on that when I get a chance later today if noone has answered for you yet.

As far as I know, no, you cannot run component and HDMI at the same time on a PS3. I could speculate on why, but that's basically irrelevant.

There is no such thing as component audio. I think he wants to do stereo output and disable the audio part of the HDMI.

Just run audio out from the TV using stereo RCA cables. The tv will convert the digital audio signal to analog.

PS3 -via HDMI-> TV -RCA Audio Out-> Receiver

This should work fine.

Tell your buddy I have a Sony DD 5.1 receiver with optical inputs I need to offload as well ;). I recently upgraded to a receiver with HDMI switching.

Yes it will work. I did this for a while when I bought a PS3 before HDTV :p
Connected the PS3 to LCD Monitor and audio out to PC speakers.

During video setup it asks you how you would like to output the audio specifically for this reason. I mean, how many people have HDMI-switching surround sound receivers? Not many, even though a great many have DVI/HDMI televisions. You have the option to output the audio over HDMI, Digital Optical S/PDIF, and multi-out (analog RCA/Cinch on component, composite, or S-Video cables).

Oh, FWIW, you need it for using HDMI with DVI televisions too. ;)

I have it set up so video is HDMI, and audio is component. I did it this way because my TV only has DVI and DVI does not have audio.

Yes, you can do this. I have mine set up this way. Just switch between audio outputs in the sound settings menu.
