Is it possible to reformat a Lexar JumpDrive from Command Prompt?

I accidentally removed my JumpDrive from the USB slot without using the "Safely Remove Hardware" process.

When I did this, somehow dozens of folders named something like "000"... were added to the JumpDrive.

I have since moved the non-"000" files to another location for 'safekeeping' unitl I get my JumpDrive working again.

I formatted my JumpDrive by right-clicking the drive in Windows Explorer and choosing Format. But now when I plug in the JumpDrive it locks up Windows Explorer and the JumpDrive doesn't autorun anymore.

Is there a way to reformat this JunpDrive via the Command Prompt?

Exactly what size and model JumpDrive is this? e.g. is it the "Safe" or "Secure", etc.? Please be specific, and the capacity, as well.

Here's what is printed on the JumpDrive case:

128MB
PD128-04-500 Rev H


I DO NOT believe it is the safe/secure model. It is at least 2 years old.

One thing I noticed from Lexar instructions is that when formatting, you should UNCHECK the "Quick Format" option and let it do a full format. Keep that in mind.

What I would try is booting up with the Lexar drive already in the USB port. If it boots up, go into Device Manager and see if there's a listing for "Storage Volumes". If so, that's probably where your JumpDrive's settings are.

When I plug my Flash Drive in, Device Manager shows the heading "Storage Volumes" and double clicking on that opens it up to "Generic volume". See if you have that, and see if there's a RED X on top of the icon for Generic volume. If there is, RIGHT-CLICK on it, and choose "Enable". The drive should work again.

It didn't show up on Generic Volumes.

I wonder if the problem occurred when I formatted it FAT32 instead of FAT.

I tried to install it but I kept getting this message, "An error occurred when trying to run file Version.exe"

I downloaded the install file from both the original and alternate locations listed on http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htm

There is another program listed in that post, did you try to use that as well?

I just tried it after reading your suggestion.

The second program opened after unzipping it but it couldn't find the USB JumpDrive.

Can you try doing this (formatting) in another pc? Your settings might be hosed for this drive on this pc, causing the problems you're experiencing. It's worth a test to rule out operating system issues on your current pc before spending tons of time on it. Try the drive on another computer, and reformat it there.

The JumpDrive locks up "My Computer" on the other PC too.

Oh well. At least I was able to get my data off this JumpDrive.

Given the ridiculously low cost of these now with much larger capacities than your old Jumpdrive, I think you're wise in giving up the troubleshooting process. Good luck.
