is it possible to pump cheap gas from the premium pump?

Can the gas stations fill up 'premium' tanks at their station with mid or low grade gas? I ask this because all the stations around here with a nozzle for each grade of gas are out of premium.. however, the pumps where all 3 grades come out of one nozzle seem to not have any problems having premium...

Haha...its possible...but I doubt a large station would risk doing that. They'd end up getting sued and paying for every car that pumped gas.

It is even possible to fill the premium gas tanks (the underground ones) with cheap regular.

yes its possible. but gas stations get checked on this a lOT. remember watching something on one of the news shows that showed it. they had a report because at the time some stations were making the numbers flow faster then the gas. So say you were paying for 10 gallons you were really getting 8.

finally they had so many complaints that they investigated them. so the news show had a big show on how they check it.

yeah, it happens all the time in Australia, not long ago the local Caltex servo got busted big time for selling regular as premium, it was the only servo in town that had a 98 premium pump so all of the guys that ran V8's, including myself would go and fill up from it only to have the engines cough and splutter after leaving.
I spent many hours trying to find out why my 5.8litre would ping and run like sh*t after filling up with this suposed 98 octane rated fuel.
Now I have a new set of heads fitted that allow me to run on regular unleaded, but I miss the down low grunt that 11:1 comp provided.

Pumps that have only one nozzle has valves to determine which tank the fuel comes from.

Yea they check that a LOT, as you put it. But I've never heard of them testing Octane levels to make sure the premium is indeed premium. They're two completely different things.

Yes. It's also worth noting that, even at stock setup, my turbovan is supposed to drink Premium. I *NEVER* knew that when it was stock and always ran it on regular. Even at low-tune (where it is now, to save me money) it's perfectly happy on regular. MOST people would never notice. Only those with SERIOUSLY high compression engines would notice much of a difference at all, and only EXTREME cases (High boost, high compression, boyracer) would have short-term problems. Of course, this sort of engine is becoming more and more common these days as people on the whole get richer.

You do know the reason for running a higher octane right? You know what a turbo does don't you?
