Is it possible to overclock a P3/866? I could use any advice.

I just recently picked up a P3-866 FC-PGA, and realize that the FSB is already at 133, however, is this chip overclockable at all? I picked up the Asus CUSL2 motherboard, and know this is a decent motherboard for overclocking.

I'm very new to overclocking, and know very little about increasing voltages etc. I haven't installed the chip/mobo yet so any info before I do this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

One more thing, if anyone else has experience overclocking this chip successfully, please let me know.

You can overclock it, but you don't have much headroom being at 133 already. High quality PC143 or PC150 ram will be a must. Also make sure that you keep your PCI bus speed down. Don't expect much more than 900 or so from this chip.

Wow 900 mhz, wouldn't even be worth oc'ing it. I bought crucial cas2 memory, the 7e sticks.. so i don't know if those would work or not.

you could probably get well above 900 on the cusl2, all depends on the chip. i built a cusl2 rig w/ a 733 for a friend and o'ced it for grins before installing all the cards. the 733 went to 913 at default voltage, stable as could be.

I hear that 143 is a popular fsb. If so, that would give me about 931 mhz wouldn't it? How do you know if your overclocking was successful? If it boots?

If it loads windows, try w/ SETI@home or RC5 , if it's still working try qIII or similia and finally a cpu stability test.

I've been running my 650E at 1021MHz for about three months now. Ever since I got my MSI board I've been running at over a gig. If you really want to overclock that 866EB, an i815 board and some PC150 or CAS2 PC133 memory will do wonders for you.

I was really lucky with my CPU though. I've actually been able to run my CPU at 1080MHz on a 166MHz bus with the memory still at 166MHz 3-2-2 for about an hour before it overheats. It makes me wonder what a peltier would do.

Good chance to run it at 6.5x142 to 6.5x144 stable. I am running it now at 6.5x144 = 936 with 1.7v core

zener,

Thanks for the info, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. =)

I actually do have an i815e board, the Asus CUSL2. Also I have Cas2 PC133 memory from crucial. Hopefully I will have some luck overclocking this badboy. Sounds like I should pick up an alpha cooler first though.

zener,

Based on your recommendation, I clocked my system at 144fsb cas2-2-2 no problems. 936 mhz just feels faster! I don't even know if it is, haven't ran benchmarks at both speeds but it sure seems to be. My temp readings are about 30 celcius when idle and 44 celcius under a heavy load, was as high as I could push it to.
