is it possible to network 2 pc's using a firewire cable?

I have a desktop pc and a laptop, both have firewire ports.

Am i able to network these two systems using just a firewire cable? (act as a cross over cable)?

I have also heard that you can link 2 systems using a special usb cable! Just wondering if it is the same with a firewire cable!
