Is it possible to make my LCD monitor into a HDTV?

Let's say I get a 24" LCD attached to my computer.

Is there a way to convert the LCD monitor into a HDTV without attaching a computer? And is the visual quality on par with regular LCD HDTVs?

If no, is there a way to convert the monitor into a HDTV using a computer?

yes, just get a cable box with HDMI or DVI, if it has HDMI you will need to get a converter to go to DVI

It will look decent

LCD montiors will look better then most HDTV. A good HD tv does 1080P a good 24 LCD montior can al most double that. When getting a LCD Monito you want o use as tv try to get ones that have a HDMI connection and that has HCDP. HDMI is not very important since most DVI cable have converts but HDCP is important.

An HD cable box or stand-alone tuner should work fine, though obviously you'd need to deal with audio separately.

As long as the display is capable of 1:1 pixel mapping quality should be better than a typical LCD TV in that size range due to the vastly superior resolution of a typical 24" PC panel.

WQXGA is very nearly 2x, though not quite.

By vastly superior I was comparing to a typical TV in that size. 1366x768 or lower is the norm for that size range. A full 1080P in 23.3" is quite good.

are you sure you want to do that?

for a little more, you can get a very good 37" 1080p HDTV that you can double as a computer monitor as well...

that would be my recommendation.

A computer monitor does a pretty good job as a TV, but when it comes to watching movies, can't compared to a good LCD TV. LCD TV's have better contrast and better screen coatings, so everything looks much more vibrant. Computer screens have anti-glare coatings and are optimized for reading text, not watching movies.

Take any 24" - 30" monitor, put it up against a 40" 1080p Bravia and play an HD-DVD or BD. The picture quality of the Bravia will simply blow away the monitor.

well bravia's are THE BEST LCD TVs available today. an average lcd tv will get beat by a good monitor.
