Is it possible to lower the RPM of the chassis fan?

I have a real quiet pc save for my top fan that plugs into the chassis of my a7n8x. Its a 80mm fan and it runs at 2800rpm according to Asus probe but I'd like to reduce the voltage somehow so it only moves at 2100ish.

My case is real cool anyway and I'd like to have a lot more quiet (those 700 IMO make a huge difference)

install speedfan to lower the speeds of all your fans!

the newest version adds support for the nforce2 chipset

I'm going through this with the 120mm fan on my new Antec SLK3700 server case (sweet case).

My bright idea since I can't solder my way out of a paper bag:
1. change the fan's cable from 4-wire to 3-wire (I'm actually going to do this with a Panflo 120mm not the Antec 120mm)
2. run it through a Zalman fanmate
3. plug the fanmate into a 3-to-4 wire adapter

I've also sent an e-mail to zalman@zalmanusa.com suggesting that they come out with a 4-wire fanmate.

You could also swap the ground the fan uses with the 5v so you end up with 7v. You would likely be under 2100 rpm though, probably more like 1800.

I tried Speed fan (it seems it might not like AsusProbe ?) and i followed the directions but could not lower the speed of that fan (i'm guessing it just reduces voltage)

But how do you lower the volatage to 5v from 7v?

I read the above posts and yeah you can do it via software but I do mine via hardware....

All you gotta do is cut the leads off of the molex or motherboard connector and hook it up to a potentiometer (or whatever the hell they call those things that vary the resistance) .... they cost 25 cents at radioshack or 5 cents at certain electronics places. anyways solder that baby on then solder the moldex back and boom you have a variable rpm fan!

Rig

I have pics of my professional *cough* job done to my rig

I don't know if a 12v fan would start at only 5v. Lowering the fans voltage to 7 volts is easy by going to the 7volts.com website.

Another option would be an aftermarket fan speed controller, either a rheobus or a fan controller.
