Is it possible to install win2k pro over a network

I want to install win2k pro on my laptop, but i don't have a cd-rom to boot off of. I was wondering if it is possible to install the OS via a network connection to my desktop?

The laptop is an Omnibook 900.

Please help. I don't feel like shelling out $200 plus for a cd-rom

Thanks in advance.

should be possible, just enable file sharing over the network and either copy all the files from the CD to the HD of your desktop and install it from the share folder, or share the CD drive on your Desktop and install it that way.

Hmm.. what if what I want to do is reformat that drive in the laptop before installing the OS? How would I enable file sharing?

i don't believe that would work. hmmm...not really sure how to do it if the comp is formatted.
keep me posted, interested also!

I did a little digging myself and come up with one thing.

Some BIOS's have the "Network Boot" option under boot sequences. I do not know how this works, but I know the answer is in that. However, the BIOS in my notebook does not have that option. So, I'm pretty sure I'm out of luck. I'll just pray my notebook comes in as NTFS (It's pre-loaded with NT4).

If anyone has ideas about forcing a network boot..please share?

At work, the admin has a diskette with DOS drivers for all common network cards (Intel, 3COM) and TCP/IP. After booting from it, you can access any share you want, including to install Win2K. I don't know how to make such a diskette, though

If your NIC cards has a boot ROM. Then you can install W2K across network. Sorry but I kind of lazy right now and don't wanna go through books so someone else migh be able to help you with that.
