I think they mean they want to encrypt them like commercial DVD's so that the customers don't just make copies for their family and friends.

And, no, I have no idea how to do it.

Suggest your friend to charge a fair price for the original and a small fee for copies.. Chances are he won't lose much business to people making their own copies..

You will need to speak to a DVD manufacturer about having DVDs made with encryption. For production runs of less than 5000 copies of one master, this is unlikely to be worthwhile.

The DVD-R and DVD+R systems were both designed so that they cannot record the encryption used on normal DVDs.

At any rate, the encryption on DVDs has been completely broken, and is no longer of any value in protecting the content.

Last time we had this discussion at one of the DV forums, I think the cost was $20,000 for it being CSSed. It is not practical. His cost model should make the money on video and production and try to cover it there with cheap copies of the DVD available.

I heard a program called GEAR has some sort of encryption.

Here is the link.
http://www.gearsoftware.com/products/windowsproducts.cfm

Its called GEAR Pro Mastering Edition. I have used the standard gear program and it was a lot better than others i have used. but i have never encrypted a DVD with this one.

"Formatting DVD titles for CSS encryption is now supported! Pure UDF and incremental packet writing to CD and DVD media is also supported, as well as Creating Unix Rock Ridge format on Windows."

I'm not sure why you'd want to.
Keeping a family from seeing their loved ones' wedding video?
Am I the only one that thinks that's wrong?
I thought that wedding photographers made most of their money through referrals.
From a business point of view I would think that a bad way to build a customer relationship. IMHO.

But regarding your question of encryption, I think that it would be a waste of money to buy that kind of software. However you could just get a pirated copy of the stuff but then you'd be a hippocrite :). Anyway I hope your friend's business does well.
