not to mention being really cool;)
but, sandbox servers as there called IIRC, do violate the agreement you have with bliz or w/e

Yes, but it is illegal and violates the TOS.

Not sure how it would be illegal?

You know that thing that you don't read that you have to accept before running a software program? Try reading it once...

There is most likely some wording in the EULA that goes something to the effect that no program or configuration will be allowed that bypasses blizzard's own servers or utilizes the client independant of blizzard's servers.

just do a search for abyss, and you have to do some editing... but of course, it isn't like the real thing with only 4-5 people..etc

also, running your own server violate your TOS with Blizzard.

I don't believe breaking the EULA is actually illegal.

No, it's not against the law, if that's what you are referring to.

But "illegal" also means anything against the rules. (i.e. Breaking the rules in sports.) And hosting your own server is definitely against the rules you agree to.

now that my subscription has ended, i'll look into this, maybe run a server for everyone here.

You do that and have fun with it. The mobs are all server side, so you would have to somehow create them on your side too.

hmmm, for some reason, there are 100's of private servers already... and running version 1.5 too with high exp on some servers... meaning there are mobs...

link to list

edit: just test the server project-wow.com and it is amazing, it is running 1.5 and i think it is a pvp server. i can't believe blizzard is letting them getting away with this. but I guess there's a draw back, here's a recent post

"It would be nice if we created a list of non working spells(skills) for all the races, so you dont hav to train them to figure that they dont work:

i'll start w/

warlock (lvl 53)
--
drain soul
drain mana
curse of agony
curse of recklessnes
fear
curse of weakness
shadowburn (causes damage only to myself)
demon skin buff (works if you relog)
all imps spells except fase-shift (im not shure that that is working 2)
all sucubuss spells
firestone
spellstone (not shure though)
soulstone

.. (server is down again so i forgot others, but there are more non working).

Sadly i figured that only 2 or 3 affliction spells work. Also demonology for imp and succubus doesnt seem to work either. Because of that warlocks are the weekest characters on our server."

You can easily face a legal issue doing this kind of stuff.

Blizzard shuts these servers down quite fast and the owners face hefty legal fees.

This is the same as using copied versions of software like windows and such.

well a lot of wow private servers have been around for months, they're even running with the latest patch. However, I guess the more private it is, the safer it'll be.

as for city of heroes, I wouldn't be surprise if private servers exist. do some research.

I ran a server so my friend could see how well it ran on his laptop, it was pretty hilarious, the monsters follow you so basically after walking around for a while i had a huge hoard chasing me, he saw me a while latter running away while this mob followed, its okay if you want to just check out the game, the private servers are decent but they still don't have that much content

I got the it running on my laptop, and was playinging.. I'm amazed that it's got more content thant I was expecting. I could go into the scarlet monastery instance. It looks a little different. I guess the entire world can be edited in world.sav to add contents. the engine core itself is buggy, while the item/creature database are all up to date with data pulled from allakazam.

So far I created a legendary (gold) jade blade of destiny just by copying the felstriker, change the item quality from epic to legendary, then lower the level req to 8 to justify its legendary status. And I changed the experience table to 3x compare to blizzard server. I'm going to check out some of the places that I've never been before and see.
