Is it possible to hide a WPA access point?

Someone I'm staying with has an access point protected by WPA. They gave me the name of the access point (which has spaces [is that possible?]) and a password. The thing is, I can't even see the access point in netstumbler. It seems to me it's just not on or something else on their end is borked. And if it isn't, how do I see it if I know the name and password? How do I do this in linux and windows? Or is the person telling me it's "hidden" just wrong?

Maybe it doesn't broadcast the SSID, which is why you have to have someone tell it to you, then you broadcast that you are looking to connect to it, then it responds.

That's how it works, right?
