Is it possible to have one cable standard for everything?

usb has been great in standardizing most aspects of computers. can one type of cabling be used for everything like audio, video, data transfer, networking, etc........

There could be, but it would be very expensive, as some things need many connections that are highly shielded, while others need just one with little shielding.

sure, Cat5 can do all of that.

edit: and fibre and coax.

That's right. No point in getting the same high-quality cable that you use for a high end LCD or sound system and using it for a gamepad or mouse. Would be a total waste of money.

plus you would have to label everything and try to keep up with what plugs where, which could possibly get very confusing
