whoops i accidently hit the enter key on the right side of the keyboard without entering anything. anyway...

i had mono(nucleosis) in april-may this year... i know that it stays in your system forever.. but can you get the symptoms again? i thought it was kinda like chickenpox where you get it once and thats it.. but one of my teachers told me that if you dont take care of yourself you can get the symptoms again.

im getting sick right now and i have the same symptoms that i had at the beginning last time.. do any of you know if its possible to actually have it again?

yeah i think its one of those things where if you have a mild case the first time that may
not confer immunity you can get it again, plus you never really recover from mono

it wasnt very mild... my throat was literally the size of a pea (im not exaggerating at all)... i couldnt eat, sleep, talk.. anything. i would try to take a tiny sip of water and choke on it. and i was in sooo much pain... the doctor gave me vicodin, but it didnt do anything for me. so i took more.. it still didnt do anything. he told me to take it with 800mg ibuprofen.. still nothing. finally i tried percoset and that helped at least enough to let me sleep finally. it was kind of annoying because while i was sick my stomach shrunk or something? (since i could not eat without very painfully forcing it down).. so when i was feeling better i would eat a couple bites of food and be completely full :-/

anyway, you didnt ask for my story.. but it wasnt a very mild case i dont think. god i hope i dont have it.

i believe herpes isn't curable.. so he was *trying* to be funny?

or i could be wrong.

but i also believe that mono is some strange form of herpes... and it does stay with you forever, but i thought you only got the symptoms once...

No almost absolutely not for people with normal immune systems. Once you get it, it remains in your system but is no longer infectious after the symptoms are gone. The only times people get mono symptoms a second time is when there is something else that causes the immune system to stop functioning such as aids, severe malnurishment, etc...

How long has it been since you last showed symptoms, it can get better and worse throughout the infectuous period usually lasts about 2 to 8 months (most people don't show any symptoms until 2-3 weeks after they've been infected)

i felt pretty much better at the end of may. i havent gotten over the tiredness part though. i think that i do have a pretty weak immune system also, because i dont eat very well at all :-/ if it doesnt go away in a couple of days ill go see my doctor.

one of the reasons im thinking that its mono is because when i had it my face got very swollen.. and in the last couple weeks it has been swollen again... but i just started feeling sick on friday or saturday i think it was. i dunno im just hoping its something curable.

I had mono in the summer between highschool and college (1986.) Then got it again around 1990 or 91 (my ex had it really bad and passed it on to me.)

It could still be the same case of mono...I think my girlfriend was the same way and it took her about 5months to get completely over it. I don't remember all the suggestions, but I do know that one major thing is making yourself eat. Mono takes away your appetite and makes it harder for your immune system to respond properly. You really have to force yourself to eat to counter act this.

Also, going to the doctor might not be a bad idea. I know a little bit about mono, but it's been a while, and i'm kinda rusty on exactly what it does and doesn't do...I'm not a doctor, I just play on on ATOT :p

doctors arent really that smart anyway. i do eat a lot now, and have actually gained a lot of weight :*(, but its just not healthy stuff. thats a whole other issue though. im gonna wait till next week to go to the doctor since i have stuff to do today, im working all day tomorrow, and im going to phoenix on friday... hopefully i have a couple days off next week so i can go :-/

Once you get it you always have it.

It can flare back up later on in life... just like herpes.

(Doctor and WebMD said that.. not the herpes bit though)

Yep and when you get a relapse and have it a second time, it can cause bad things to happen. I just got over mono and the doc said a relapse is usually a hellava lot worse

Hmmm...I had a blood test 5 years ago and the doctor said it showed I had mono, but I was just tired for awhile - I didn't get any sick symptoms. Is that generally odd?

I was also told it never truly goes away from your body, just lays dormant.

That's what I had too.. blood tests said I had mono but all it did to me was make me tired for a few weeks.

Sure, it's possible.

It doesen't generally happen to normal, healthy people though.

Mono sucks.

It is a form of the herpes virus, that is why there are all these herpes references here.
