We have an ethernet at work and I was wondering if it is possible for me to my assistant to have access to some files on my hard drive. We use Win98SE and right now all we share is our network printer. If it is possible, how do I do it? Suggestions for a web site would be great as well.

you are kidding right? just share the folder/Drive and give it a password(for 9x)

Gets a little more complicated with NTFS, if you are using NTFS let me know.

Using 98se so NTFS is not an option.

As simple as it gets

1. Open "My Computer"
2. Go to the drive or folder that you want others to have access to and right click.
3. Select The "Sharing" option
4. Mark the radio button for "Shared As"
5. Enter the name you want to share it as(does not have to relate to actual name, ie You can share the folder "Work Stuff" as "My junk"
6.Decide if you want them to have Read Only, Full Access or Depends on password.

Read only- They can open but cannot edit, delete, rename the file
Full Access- They can do whatever they want to with it.
Depends on password- you can specify who has what type of access.

7. Assign password for desired levels
8. Confirm Passwords
Thats it on you PC

At each users PC they need to
1. Right click on "Network Neighborhood"
2. Select "Map Drive"
3. Select any drive letter and For Path they enter "\\yourcomputername\sharename
4. Make sure reconnect at logon is checked
5. They will be prompted for the password if one is assigned
6. All done

Now when they open my computer they will have a Drive that points to the drive or folder you have shared. Such as their k: drive will point to \\yourcomputer\work files. I would suggest sharing only a folder and keeping all of your files in it. Keep in mind if you share your entire drive they will have access to everything. Sorry for the length. If you have any other questions or stumble accross something I left out lmk by PM.

Map drive is not an option in 98. Works in 2000, NT and even ME but not 98.

Win98 should look for drives and automatically list what it finds. This is a shortcoming of 98. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hmm, if he is only sharing printers right now, he may also have to go into network properties/file and print sharing and click the check box for I want to give others access to my files. They are seperate options.

Good catch bot2600. Um I have the option to "Map Network Drive" on all of the 200+ Windows 98 Machines I support.

Then how do you do it?? I know you can map drives "to" a win98 machine from an NT or 2000 server but how do you map drives ON the 98 machine. The poster is running 98.

I know it may be sound "crazy", just go to Windows Help (the original MS), type in the index map, and "voila":

Quote from Windows Help:

To assign (map) a drive letter to a network computer or folder
1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Map Network Drive.
3. In Path, type the path to the you want. For example:

\\computername\foldername

If a password is required, Windows prompts you.
Notes

- You can also right-click My Computer or Network Neighborhood, and then click Map Network Drive.

- To map to a computer or folder you've used recently, click the arrow to the right of Path, and then click the resource you want.

I stand corrected. But how stupid to have to go through explorer and not have this option available in network neighborhood. Guess they figured out how stupid it is as that is how it is done in all newer version of the OS.

You can also use NET USE with windows 98. You can get to the map drive option by right clicking on NN or you can choose to show the Map Drive button in the tool bar of any explorer window.
