Let me explain my setup. Down in my basement is the cable modem and a wired router. Right now the router splits the modem into 3 different cable lines. One goes to the computer in the basement, another to a computer upstairs in my room, and another to my brothers xbox. I was wondering if theres a way i can get a wireless connection into my room, without replacing the wired router in my basement. I know my dad isnt going to want to mess with the wires and replace the wired router with a wireless router. So thats basically out of the question. Is there anyway i can get wireless internet into my room upstairs?

add a wireless access point, simply plug it into an open port on your existing router, and you've got wireless.

Yeah you can replace the current Router withs a Wireless Router and have both Wire and Wireless.

Yo might have distance issue with thw Wireless Router sitting in the basement but it can be easly remedied with more Hardware.

EDIT: Don't forget to setup security! I'd recommend WPA-TKIP for protection.

Yeah me bad.:( I am sorry I have the unforgivable tendency to provide more Information than needed. Most people tend to be able to tolerate a one-liner answer, while I posted few links that might take 20 min. to read and derive the best solution for your situation.

Access Points tends to be more expensive than Wireless cable/DSL Router:shocked:, and your solution probably is here: Wireless Cable/DSL Router or Access Point - What should I get?

Another problem you might encounter is not getting good signal from your room since the router is in the basement.

Why don't you just buy a small switch, plug your existing line in your room into the switch (uplink) and then plug your computer and a 802.11g access point into the switch, voila, wireless in your room with excellent signal.

Why can't you replace the wired router? I know you said that you can't but if it's for fear of the wireless router being unstable or flaky you don't have anything to worry about.

I was thinking about that, but i was unsure if it would work.

so basically:

line in my room---->switch--->computer + access point?

can you recommend me a good brand?

by the way the router i have in my basement is a linksys.

Correct. I'd suggest just finding some cheap 4 or 5 port switch somewhere (anything will work) and maybe buy a Linksys WRT54G router. I know you said you don't want a router but routers are usually cheaper than access points and if you turn off the firewall and DHCP, you basically have an access point with future upgradability. But yes, just unplug the line in your room from your computer, plug it into a port on a switch and plug in another cable into another port and plug it into your computer and then you have 2 or 3 leftover ports for an access point and whatever else you might need.
