Is it possible to have a SuperBright Shadow Mask?

Like this thing. Theres a few more on thier site that have the SuperBright feature, but I want to be sure they are aperture grills (or should I call them SonicTrons?). Because I want to add to the list I started.

I have to admit i don't get teh fuss over AG, i've used AG & shadow mask side by side, and imho a good shado mask is at least as good, arguably better since it doesn't have the crappy lines all over it ;)

As to your question, since superbright is just cranking up the brightness/contrast (iirc anyway) i can't see why not

I've seen a Samsung shadow mask with this sort of brightness enhancement feature and it didn't look half as good as superbright to me (became blurry and wasn't able to retain the black level), but I don't know what the Viewsonic feature looks like. The refresh rates seem rather low on that particular model though.

I don't like shadow masks since their local color uniformity is not as good as aperture grills and their geometry tends to get distorted over time. The AG lines can at times get annoying, but I think they are far outweighed by the other advantages of these tubes. There is also the fact that almost all of the top end CRTs in general were of the AG type. High end shadow masks were always quite rare.

Not exactly, they were made by different companies and IIRC the electron gun placements are somewhat different. :p

I did not know that

My Samsung shadow mask probably counts as high end, as do most 21" & above CRTs ;)

I've also seen some awful geometry on AG monitors, stuff getting squashed in one corner etc...

Welp, AGs were consistently flat (relatively) were they not while SMs varied a lot? I remember some with curves like a frickin fish bowl. I had an IBM brand Sony Trinitron which sported three viewing modes (standard, presentation, graphics/video) with varying brightness and sharpness via a convenient button toggle. I suppose that's akin to the SuperBright feature but obviously not directly relevant to your list of competing Mitsubishi based displays.

As an owner of a viewsonic CRT with ultrabright, i can safely say its a great feature. I love leaving it off to reduce eye strain when im working, i turn it on to watch movies and play games.

No, it's not. It was manufactured by Mitsubishi, not Sony and is arguably higher quality than the Sony Trinitron.

Both do have the horizontal wires though. However, they bothered me for like 1 hour after first setting the monitor up and I have to force myself to look at them to know they are even there now.

EDIT: One major advantage of AG tubes over SM tubes is that AG tubes require only one electron gun, not 3. This makes them far more reliable and they stay in focus far better than SM tubes do. Like most electro-mechanical devices, simpler is better 99% of the time.

EDIT2: I don't know why you would want a super bright feature personally. My Philips 19" monitor has a "light frame" auto adjust mode that I never use - it makes the picture quality hideous IMHO.

I use one (Philips 109b6) at school. I think the lightframe mode makes the colors great but text becomes really blurry. It might be ok for games and movies, but havent got a chance for those at school yet.
