Lots of my favorite classic video games used GameSpy for their online play.

But it was shut down in 2013, meaning all the games that used GameSpy are no longer playable online.

Could it be brought back?

I remember playing halo and it used Gamespy. I don't recall if it still went through it for self hosted servers though... might still be possible to connect directly to a server depending on the game? Overall not a fan of any game that does not allow self hosted servers though, because you're at the mercy of them keeping their servers going. Same reason why I am against subscription software.

Ah, brings back memories.

GameSpy. There was another one called HEAT which was put out by SEGA. They gave weekly prizes, and I was able to play games like Kingpin, UT and AOE.

I thought at the time that it was incredible. Being able to play online with other people.

Quake spy was frickin amazing for finding quake servers and quake2 servers. I believe that got renamed to gamespy when they added more games to it.

I miss KALI for playing IPX games over the internet even though had 28.8kbit back then and duke nukem 3d was a lagfest with it. Was so much better at Lan Parties!

Depending on the game, many unofficial community "master" servers, or replacement master servers exist to allow for multiplayer. Steam for example has their own servers for many older games that used to rely on gamespy.
