Is it possible to get an expungement early?

So I was convicted of a felony a couple years back and given one year of probation. I have completed probation, paid all my fines, gone to school part time while working and have been a stand up citizen since. However, I see that I would have to wait 10 years (in New Jersey) before my felony can be expunged?? This is difficult for me because I find that my stupid mistake will cast a bad shadow on me if potential employers run a background check.

I spoke to a lawyer who said it MIGHT be possible to get it expunged under some "young age rule" (I was 19 at the time), but he wouldn't go into detail without me forking over some money for him to review the case. Hopefully someone on here can give me a little more insight..

I remember years ago, in CA, you had to be under 18.

Yea, I was pretty aware of the rule that a minor is under the age of 18, and I made it clear to the lawyer I spoke with that I was over 18 at the time. But he seemed to still think he had a chance to do something..

1. Find a lawyer that offers a free initial consultation.
2. Ask him the question.
3. ???
4. Spongemeat!

As a rule, (NJ may be different) once you're convicted of a felony as an adult, that stays on your record forever. The ONLY way to have it removed is by Gubernatorial or Presidential pardon.

Once you are convicted, PERIOD! My possession of fireworks in CA. 32 years ago is still on my record. Maybe I'll give the Guber a call.

True. Misdemeanors stay there forever as well. Your juvenile record can be expunged (and sealed) after you're 18 and stay out of trouble for a certain amount of time.
MAYBE some states look at this differently, but the feds don't. Once you're a felon, you're ALWAYS a felon. However, AFAIK, the ONLY civil right you can't get restored upon completion of a sentence is the right to own firearms. That remains a federal felony forever unless you are able to get relief from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. (nearly impossible to do since the Bush administration took office.)
