I'm still deciding whether to buy a friends laptop. It's a Compaq Presario 800T or 80XL4, which is supposed to support up to 256mb pc100. If I were to find registered (I don't even know if this exists....) memory, is it plausible that I might be able to squeeze more memory in that laptop?

Registered won't make a difference. Theoretically, 512MB might work if it's wired correctly. Sometimes the specifications have more to do with what is available at the time than what the system can actually support.

Hint: High-density memory probably won't work. You're going to need the old school designs.
