Is it possible to earn a living from a website?

I've heard it said that the best way to earn a living is to do something that you love. Well for me I love books, music, movies and video games. If I had the time I'd spend every waking moment doing one of those activities (minus eating and posting here :p)

Anyway I'm making some progress in getting my first site together. I've registerd a company name, registered a domain name, setup a LLC, I'm contacting suppliers for the products I need and I'm taking care of a few other things as well in preparation for the website.

However I need a little more info from experienced web owners/admins. I need to learn how to get traffic to my future site. I also need to learn about the ins and outs of advertising, I really want this site to do well. Can anyone out there offer some suggestions? Or maybe point me to a forum that has the info I'm looking for?

thanks

Yes of course it is but it will require LONG hours, patience, ambition, fresh content and elbow grease!

Here is a very inspiring story I found.

the problem is that everyone loves that stuff. you need to find a niche that hasn't been done to death and find some way to add value. otherwise people will just order that crap from amazon.

To make a popular website requires a lot of time and luck. Even if you spend every waking hour at it, nothing is guaranteed.

First, post it here on ATOT, you'll get the ATOT effect.

Second, make sure it's somehow different. Maybe add forums or something to the site? Try to make it somewhat personal that way people will feel like they want to come back, just for the experience if not for the savings.

Third, try to offer the cheapest yet highest quality product. In this case, it's kinda hard because you're selling stuff that people can buy anywhere and get the exact same thing.

Well I actually do have a little niche/theme that suprisingly has'nt been done to death. At least not from what I've seen.

i think its like 9 out of 10 business fail in their first year or two, and of those that dont fail in the first 2, 4 out of those 5 fail in the first 5 years.

But it can be done! Dont give up. Be patient and work hard. Even if you dont "make it" this time you will learn A LOT and then you can try again with better luck.

A woman that only speaks the truth? Questionable, but we won't go there. :p

I dunno, this guy says he has some kind of gimmick, maybe he'll make it and be some super-famous guy 20 years down the line, and when he talks about how it all started in a thread and this one user Moshquerade told him he would fail, you can tell your kids that was you.

There are still lots of ideas out there ripe for picking. It's a shame the "AT money making venture" never really took off.

Putting our combined talents together there is such real potential to rake in some $$$, even if it's an extra $500 a month --- it's better than neffing for free.

Oh well time to eBay some electronics :)

It's hard to do, but if you offer something people want and do a good job at it, it'll sell. :)

What happened with that? To many chefs in the kitchen?

It can be done; it's what I do for a living and I compete in one of the most, if not the most, competitive markets - travel. It takes a bit of work and time to develop a steady income.

I don't even know what the "AT money making venture" was. Maybe we could bring it back?

Oh and Moshquerade, maybe if he writes a book, you'll be somewhere in there as "the one who fueled the fire." ;)

A website is just like any other business in term of success. It's going to be really slow.. and that WILL NOT CHANGE until you advertise yourself and find ways to encourage business.

With websites, you will only get out of a website what you put into it. You need something to keep people at your site. A pretty look and a good product line unfortunately isn't enough for most people. Complete reviews, pictures, specifications and everything you wanted to know about the product is the minimum you should expect to put up.

Bottom line: You must give people a reason to come, a better reason to stay for a while... and an excellent reason to come back.
