Is it possible to downgrade Direct X?

I have DirectX 8.0a right now. I also have an ATI AIW Pro (PCI), and whenever I use the ATI drivers, it freezes in games (incl. Half-life, Unreal Tournament, Homeworld, and X-wing alliance). I can remedy this problem by using the drivers that come with Winblows98, but then I lose OpenGL support. I want to try to go back to Direct X 7, and see if the ATI drivers will work with that, but I don't know how to install an older version over a newer version... it always says "Newer version found, DirectX installation not necessary," etc. If anybody knows how, TIA.
P.S.- Please, don't tell me to just get a new video card, unless you're volunteering to give me money for it. :D

Well, I went over there, and their download page says temporarily unavailiable. :( I'll poke around some more.

I'd recommend you reinstall Windows, otherwise you might end up with problems. I tried one of those DX uninstallers and it screwed up my system so that any DX I installed later wouldn't work properly.

Well, you're probably right, but I don't really want to do that, as I just did it 5 days ago. :| Maybe I can just work around it until I can get a better card.
