I am interested in upgrading a current windows xp machine to windows 7 64bit. What i am wondering though is if it's possible to basically do a full transfer of files, programs, program settings, registry settings and so forth? From what i have heard, you can transfer of some stuff but not every thing just using the installation disk. I was wondering if any third party programs allow something like this?

I just ran the laplink pcmover, it has an option to upgrade to windows 7 without losing your program, settings.. better off talking to someone from that company if you dont want to do a reinstall

Why would you want to do this? Even if it does work, I am certain it'll be more work and problems than just going with a fresh install. (In particular, the change from 32 bit XP to Windows 7 64).

Make an image of your XP install so you know you can go back 100% to what you had before. Now try and see how it goes. Just uncheck the option to "activate when online" you will see during the install process. Now you have 30 days to make sure you like it before you nuke the install and try something different, like a clean install.

If you have enough HDD space... you can do a HDD -> VHD ... then save that VHD elsewhere temporarily. Then wipe your target PC HDD and do the clean install of 7 on it. Then load up virtualbox and create a new VM and attach the VHD to it, boot it up and you can mess around w/ ur old PC in a VM to aid you in tryin to get everything set up in windows 7 how it was in ur XP install.
