Is it possible to disassemble the LGA 775 push pins?

I just bought a new heatsink for my Q6600 and since I'm an idiot I put the push pins together without putting them in the mounting bracket thing on the cooler. Obviously they need to be there to mount it, but I cannot for the live of me take these dang things apart.

I've been pulling them as hard as I can for a few hours now but they just won't budge at all. Is it possible to take them apart, or am I screwed?

I bought an Xigmatek HDT-S1283, but I don't think that's relavent. My push pins aren't attached to the motherboard or the cooler. The little black and clear part that make up the push pin are attach to each other, and that's it. They obviously need to be attached to the cooler so I can mount it, but I can't attach them because they need to be disassembled to do that.

Yes, it is possible to disassemble the plastic Intel-style push pins. I've done it several times.

You will need steady hands and a really small slotted screwdriver.

Basically there is a clip that holds the outer black piece to the inner translucent white piece. The clip is part of the black piece. You need to pry the clip outwards (without breaking it of course) and away from the white piece, then slide the inner piece out. The clip is in the side where you can see an opening.

I've also noticed that it is easier in one of the positions (AKA locked or unlocked) but don't remember which.

If my quick description doesn't make sense, LMK and I'll try taking some pics.

I used to always remove the push pins on the stock coolers or any other aftermarket coolers that came with them (I know, why did they include them in aftermarket coolers?). Just as Zap describes it, it's a very simple process to remove them, do-able with just about anything like a thin knife to pry it.

Makes one hell of a huge difference in temps by replacing the push pins with nuts and bolts for a tighter mount.

Here is the closeup of a push pin. You will want it rotated clockwise, as if you were going to push it down to lock it (counter-clockwise would be to loosen it).

I have indicated a little nub with the red box. It sticks out, so it needs to be oriented a certain way. If you have it rotated clockwise, it will be oriented the proper way. Basically it needs to go the direction the red arrow is pointing because that's the only way it can leave the black part surrounding it. The green line is the ridge that the black clip (next to the line) pushes against to keep it from coming apart.

What you want to do is to use something (I use a small slotted screwdriver) to slightly lift up the black clip about a millimeter.

While it is lifted up pull the two pieces apart and it should start coming apart with no problems. This is the tricky part because you have to be pulling it apart while leveraging the clip with a screwdriver. Much easier while it is mounted on the heatsink, but possible either way. Once the tip of the black clip is past the translucent white part, you are home free.
