Is it possible to create a dial-up internet connection to MSN without having MSN Explorer be the default browser?

If so, how? I tried to create a connection with the Connection Wizard but the MSN network wouldn't accept my username/password.

I got the free 6 months of MSN for puchasing a PC and would like to continue using it with IE or Netscape not MSN Explorer.

Thanks!

it's very possible, but i don't have the exact answer for you.

In the username box, it's something like "MSN/username" and your password is your password. Call up MSN tech support...i'm sure they'd be happy to tell you.

you're joking right? MSN support wouldn't want to tell me how to bypass their browser and dial-up dialog box .... right?

Create a normal dial-up networking connection, and bmacd is right: The username should be either: MSN/username MSN\username or username@MSN I can't remember exactly.

The password will be the same.

I got the same deal from Dell that turned into 10 free months through MSN.

Just connect through MSN, minimize MSN Explorer, open Internet Explorer (or Netscape or Opera) and continue as "normally" . . . it doesn't eat up any more bandwith if you turn off the MSN "auto" features.

You don't even need msn explorer installed if you use a hotmail account to make your msn email account with. Like the other guy said, do the username like he did and it works fine.

I've tried every combination of MSN/username (like Kilrsat mentioned above) along with my password and i get an "invalid username or password" error message. Then when I use the MSN dialup (along with the same username and password that I used for the regular dial-up) I connect just fine.

By the way, my username is my hotmail.com username...that shouldn't make a difference right?

Wow, this must be your lucky day, I just so happened to used to work for MSN tech support. Don't anymore, so I am gonna blow thier cover. You can completely delete the MSN explorer, you don't need it, just MSN bs that they put you through, trust me the stupid thing crashes your puter more often than they would like it to. OH and if you by chance happen to use MSN 7.0, don't use it with ME. It wipes you dialup networking as soon as you download it and restart. You do by the way have to use msn/username in the username field in a manual connection in dialup networking, in the properties go and check only log on to network, tcp/ip, and enable software compression in the server types tab. Then put a shortcut to your connection on your desktop. If you get the right tech on the line, they will do it for you, but they will get a big butt chewing from the supervisor that listens to that call. I truely don't care anymore, just trying to help. Although if you want some good advice, stop paying for that trash and get a local ISP. Oh and just a little info if you want to delete msn explorer in xp, you have to go into windows components in the add and remove programs, it is a windows component on xp.

Well welcome to OT.

He did mention he got 6 months free (with his Dell 'puter just like I did with my Dell Notebook).

I am NOT complaining about my 10 months FREE. I think that is the "right price" for MSN. ;)

:D

Actually, their service is "fair" to better than "average" if you compare with AOL or Earthlink. Heck, now I got BlueLight for $8.95 a month unlimited (and it's just as fast as the "others" in my areas). BTW, just using MSN Explorer to dial-up was problem-free for me even though I NEVER used it as a browser (anymore than I could stand to use AOL's interface). "Search" sometimes was convenient.

Okay, here's the skinny from MSN tech support regarding creating a regular dial-up connection to MSN.

Use the following as your connect username:

MSN/username

YOU CANNOT use a hotmail.com account as the username.

You should know better . . . I wasn't about to give up 10 FREE months of dial-up by MSN. Since my free MSN only ended last week and I am only going to be in my San Diego apartment a few more weeks (and broadband isN'T available at my desert home), I just got el cheapo BlueLight to tide me over till next Spring when I'm back in SD again for cable (unless Dell wants to give me 'lifetime' MSN dialup as compensation for the Dell Hell they are putting me through). :D
