Is it possible to connect an IDE HD to a laptop's PCMCIA slot?

I'm trying to cheaply expand my storage capacity of an old laptop and want to be able to hook up a stadard IDE HD to my laptop's PCMCIA slot. Is there some kind of adpater that can be purchased. What about the power source for the drive? Laptop does not have USB, but does have a parallel port. I ultimatley want to use the HD with the laptop, and then potentially hook the same drive up to a standard PC to offload files. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I believe there are some IDE -> External IDE adapters that will convert to pcmcia, but I don't know how expensive they are. Note that it will be a pain to put it back in the PC because you'll have to take it out of the case.

You've got a couple choices. They make an external IDE drive cage in both USB (not going to help you) and parallel port varieties. Another thing to consider is a PCMCIA SCSI card and an external drive cage for a SCSI drive. But that would require you to buy a SCSI card for your desktop. Either way, you are goign to have to tear apart the cage to get to the drive to install it directly into the desktop.

Not sure if it fits into your cheap category, but i would just get a bigger HD to put into the laptop. Use a network cable or a laplink cable to transfer files between the laptop and the desktop. Kind of depends on whether or not you have a network card already or not, and how important speed is.
