Is it possible to "clone" a modem?

Ika

Lifer
Say I have two cable modems that are identical in model, form, and seemingly all else. Is there any way to make one modem "look" like the other modem to the ISP? Is it possible to clone the MAC address of a modem through any means?

I'm pretty sure it isn't, but if someone can tell me for sure... thanks!

Why do you need to do something like this?

It's a bit complicated, and I don't really want to give out the details. Let's say my main cable modem is the one that's registered with my ISP, but during the day time, I don't have access to it. Thus, I want to know if I can replace the first modem with another one (both will never be hooked up at the same time, just at different periods of the day).

You should consult your ISP since an issue like this is Not a modem issue but depends on how they actually authenticate.

It also in all likelihood Not even Legal to do something like this.

It might fall under accessing a Network infrastructure without authorization, which is a felony in many states.
