Is it possible to claim an abandoned vehicle?

I live in Ontario. There is a late model Mazda Precidia in excellent condition that has been sitting in a parking lot near my house for close to a year. Serious. Over the winter it was covered with snow from the plows clearing the lot. There is no signs indicating it's for sale. I can only assume it has been abandoned.

Is anyone familiar with the laws regarding claiming an abandoned vehicle? Is this even possible? Where would I find such information?

Yeah, the law is 180 days in Canada. You can hook up to it and take it home. You can take my word for it too, because I am a lawyer... in Canada.

It must be a very large parking lot if someone hasn't paid attention enough to have it towed after noticing it there for so long. Are you sure it's never moved from that spot once in all that time? If it was stolen you would think the cops would have run the plates by now and done something about it. Very odd it wouldn't be claimed by someone.

That's what I thought.

I am 100% positive the car hasn't moved an inch since last summer. It was under several feet of snow only a few weeks ago.

So... if the car somehow found its way onto your property, then you could claim it? :)

Yeah but then you might be charged with postion of stolen proprety. The better course of action would be to find the owner of the lot ask him to claim it for you and then buy it off of him.

Wait till it gets towed to an impound yard. Let it sit one month. After that, the Towing company owns the car. Buy it from them at a steal. It works, because I was offered a great shape 1971 Charger with a factory 340 4bbl. They wanted $500 to get it out of the lot.
