Is it possible to buy a decent power supply for less than $30 or 40

I suppose I know what the good power supplies are, and I generally recommend and build with Seasonic-manufactured models (Antec, Corsair, PC Power&Cooling).

That said, I've a lot of older machines sitting around whose power supplies I don't trust or have already failed. I'd like to buy three or four basic PSUs for these machines, and by basic, I mean they don't require modular cabling, high efficiency, great wattage, etc. I just don't want them to blow up my kit or fail after two months. We're talking about pre-2005 systems, often with sub-1 GHz cpus, nothing serious in the way of graphics -- and these systems will never be under severe load. Most of them will be running as file servers (okay, perhaps efficiency matters a little).

I don't seem to be able to find much in the way of reliable power supplies below $40 (including postage). I seem to recall being able to buy Fortron and Sparkle PSUs for less than $30, but those days appear to be long gone. The rebates that used to obtain Antec power supplies for less than $30 also seem to have dried up. The Rosewills, CoolMax, and the like have frightening reviews.

Is it my imagination, or are power supplies and cases generally increasing in price? Technology usually gets cheaper, but PSUs and cases are probably more sensitive to raw materials costs, and those have been getting expensive this decade (rise of China, India, etc).

Edit: I may have to bite the bullet and pay $50 (- $10 rebate) for this Corsair, though $40 (+ tax, ugh) is at my upper bound. I'm not buying four of these, heh. Still, it seems preferable to buy one of these rather than get an inferior unit for $35 + almost $10 shipping.

HEC do seem to be fairly decent for the price. They are not going to win any gold review awards, but they are better than some of the crap that's out there. For a basic system HEC should fit the bill.

I bought some of those before, for low end systems. I wouldn't trust them for anything needing more than half the rated power, but none of them blew up running low end systems. One thing though is that the two 80mm fans are pretty loud.

I'd keep shopping. A deal is bound to pop up for something better within the $40 price range.

AFAIK all the good units being sold for really cheap were sold at below cost, sometimes a LOT below costs. For instance Geeks had $15 Enhance 500W units. That is at least 1/3 cost, but some company (who bought a ton of them from Enhance) was just dumping them. Happens to other companies too. jonnyGURU talked about this: "It turns out that customers were only interested in the LS-550 once we (BFG) dropped the price to below cost."

hec -- that was the brand I had been meaning to ask about! And the $25ish price is exactly what I was looking for. I'll have to give these a try.

Antec Basiqs... are these essentially the descendents of their old 'SP' power supplies? As I recall, there were some issues with the tail end of the SPs (perhaps necessitating the rebranding?).

Also, should one be wary of refurb power supplies. I remember someone suggested that they usually have simply replaced some caps, so essentially good as new.

No..the old Smartpower were made by CWT. The Basiqs are made by FSP and Delta

I'd rather have a Basiq than a HEC....

AMEN Brother!! I understand that the higher-end HEC's might not be too bad, but the lower-end, which is where were looking, they aren't so good.

I ran a "585W" HEC for a short period of time in my current system, before I upgraded to a GTX260 (was running an 8800GT). For the most part, it was fine. At peak draw it would occasionally act up (system reboot or video freeze), but if I kept it below ~240W it was fine. At least it didn't damage anything.

IMO, wait for one of those crazy $25 OCZ 500W deals. It's about time for it to make the rounds again.

I just got an Ocz ModXstream-Pro 500W off zipzoomfly. It was $70, but had a $30 rebate, and zipzoomfly doesn't charge for shipping or tax to my state.

i usualy wait until antec has a rebate, got a antec 500w for like 35 I remember. also i got in on the enhance 5150gh deal months ago for 500W model//$21 each. just wait for a rebate deal, it's usually the way to go for PSU if you want to get it cheap. OCZ has a ton of rebates although I don't use one so don't know about the quality. I personally just wait for antec rebates to show up or maybe corsair hx or vx to have a rebate. these two are excellent quality.

Jah, my normal practice in the past was to buy Antec power supplies on sale, with rebate. But those don't seem to be as common anymore, or as attractive. Perhaps I'm simply not looking at the right times. It's hard to believe now that I got my Antec P182 case for $60 after rebate, and my NeoHE 500W for $35 AR.

That said, I ordered the Newegg Shell Shocker yesterday: the 400W Corsair CX power supply for $30 after rebate + tax ($3.50 in my state). Also ordered the $20 refurb Antec Basiq from Fry's. Still debating whether I should try an hec or wait for an Antec sale / rebate. Knowing that the Basiqs are Fortron makes even a Basiq sale appealing.

I'm guessing you have an affiliation with that site? 5 posts and 2 of them link to that site?
