Is it possible to burn an MPEG-1 stream on a DVD?

My friend was wondering. He has a ton of video and wants to use it on his home entertainment system.

One theory he had is burning an MPEG1 stream onto a DVD and hoping that his set top unit recognized it.

Is such a thing even possible?

Get TMPGEnc http://www.tmpgenc.net

You can use its projecty wizard (file - project wizard) to use a dvd template and create a dvd encoded file that you can use something like ulead dvd workshop to burn to a dvd-r!

you don't have to reencode... Just burn the MPEG-1 files as a VCD on the DVD-R media.

That way you fit a lot more video. Converting MPEG-1 to MPEG-2 (DVD format) is useless. It won't look better and will waste space.

Yeah, I read too fast, thought he said the videos were mpeg-1. If they're decent quality AVI, it would be better to make a real DVD...

Well my question is with a DVD burner is it possible to burn a VCD type template onto a DVD and fit 8 hours of video onto a DVD, which his DVD player will recognize?

BTW, he is content with VCD quality video for casual viewing, and this is exactly what this is for. No 'Video quality' concerns beyond VCD quality.

Here's the specific link on DVDRHelp.com showing how to burn an MPEG-1 file onto DVD-R.

As stated above, you'll need to use TMPGEnc to convert from AVI to MPEG-1, then use the above link to burn to DVD. Good luck!
