My youngest daughter is off to college in the fall and I'd like to send her w/laptop in hand.. more for word proccessing than internet or gaming but am sure knowing her she'll want to download some morppheus stuff.. Where can I get parts for or information about building a laptop myself.. Or is it cheaper to buy a used one and upgrade?? I'm new to laptops so I am therefore ignorant to their in and outs.. I have built a tower or two and currently have 2 operating at home.. Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated.. Links are also wonderful:confused:

- The 'search'-function of this forum is starving for queries.

- it's not possible to build a whole laptop yourself. There are few standards on laptop parts.

- upgrading a laptop goes fine for RAM, HD but not much more.

Agree with Elledan - laptops are very proprietary. Also, there is no economy of scale in the laptop parts market, and you would end up paying a lot more for the computer than just buying one outright. If you don't want to spend much, check out E-Bay for used ones. That is also a good source for spare parts.
