My friend just got a playstation2

he also recently got a puppy. :p Not a good combination.

Would it be possible for him to back up his playstation2 games? I know that a lot of PS2 games come on CDs.

Would he have to use CloneCD or something to back them up?

BTW, I hope this thread doesn't get locked, because I truly am asking about backing up games, not "pirating" them. Windogg made a post about this in General Hardware but we never heard anything more about whether you can back them up.

I suppose if the game you have did come on a cd, and you made a perfect copy with CloneCD with a disc with a dark blue bottom, that it might be possible.

Until they have a mod chip out, I dont think you will be able to though. I heard they had one in Japan, but not in the US yet.

they definitley can be copied, you'll just have to wait for a mod chip that can be put in your friends PS2. If I had a PS2 i'd personally wait for a external plug mod or have it installed by a professional.

IBhacknU, huh?

Why would he need a mod chip? What is the importance of it. By the way, if he used CloneCD, isn't that bit by bit writing so wouldn't it get around any security (that the mod chip would bypass?).

Why would you need a backup of the game? Sony explicitly says there is no need to duplicate for backing up :)

Well, I am glad that I backed up my Playstation games when I first got them. I didn't pirate them, I just made one copy of the game and used that copy to play with instead of the original. About a month ago, my clumsy friend was over, and sat on my burnt copy of Gran Turismo 2. If I had not backed up my game, that could have been my original copy of Gran Turismo 2, which would have put me out 50 bucks. The next day, I made another copy of GT2, and am happily playing it today. And I am so glad that I did... the bottom line... NOONE CAN TELL ME THAT IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO BACK UP GAMES!!!

They already have mod chips for PS2 in Asia (so I've been told). If the PS2 games are CD format then it maybe possible to copy them and use them in conjuntion with a mod chip but if the PS2 games are on a DVD, I guess your screwed unless you have a DVD burner. Another thing that some games makers are doing is writing in coded protection, ie. you can play with a mod chip until a certain level (ie. PS Spyro 2, until 5 levels from the end) or not at all (ie. PS Dino Crisis).

Cheers,

Hah! Good luck copying some of them bigger games like "SSX" and "Timesplitters," I'd rather just go the legal way, especially when Metal Gear Solid 2 comes out!! :D
