Is it possible my HX 850 fried both my HDD and SSD?

Mmm where to start... Well um my current setup has my 6 fans, pump, and ssd on the same 5v connector, and my HDD on it's own line coming out of my PSU. However I believe my PSU only has 1 5v rail with several connectors.. Anyways.

I was doing some high clock benches on my 470's with programs on my HDD when it suddenly froze unlike anything I've had happen before. So I had to flip the switch on the PSU and when I booted back into windows my HDD was gone.

I tried switching the plugs in the back, tried a new line... Nothing worked, then I tried something which turned out to be really stupid, I attempted to test the 5v cable with my SSD. I put that on the 5v cable as it was working perfectly fine on the other, once doing so I no longer had a SSD. It wouldn't even work on the other 5v line it was on.

So then I pulled the HDD from my laptop and put my SSD into it and got nothing, dead. I tried my HDD from my laptop on my fan/pump 5v cable and it worked, I will not be testing the other 5v line with it as I don't have many more HDD's to break.

So my question is, is this even possible, does it make any sense at all? How is the cable basically in this case blowing up HDDs and SSDs?

Also how are the Samsung and Crucial rma processes, is something like this covered and should I consider RMA'ing my PSU which I'm actually using now with the laptops windows install (lol).
