Hi, my brother is thinking about getting a Mac (I know!). Currently we have a network set up and he shares my ADSL connection over the LAN. I am just wondering if it is possible at all to share my internet connection while he is on say Mac OS X and myself on XP Pro. Thanks for your help.

Sure, at least if you are using a router. Might be a problem if you are trying to cheap out and use an ICS-type solution instead. See this FAQ.

If you have a router+switch then it is very easy to let Macs and PCs share an internet connection (file sharing is a different story, however).

If you don't already have a router I would recommend buying one, it makes things so much easier and you can get a router for under $50 these days.

He meant file sharing is easy with OS X because it uses Samba for SMB file sharing (which is what Windows uses).

I thought it was reasonably easy to share files between Mac OS X and Windows. Internet sharing is a breeze with Mac OS 9/X.

With a router you dont even need ICS (Internet connection sharing) enabled ... As far as files im not sure, I dont think you can use the file sharing services that are in windows, you may have to download some kind of mac file sharing service for your network card for it to work ... But I dont know anything about mixed OS's ..
