Is it possible for someone to actually break glass with thier voice?

maybe if it was artificially amplified - other than that, I'd say no. For some reason, people say this about Mariah Carey all the time.

it has to be at the right pitch and volume for the glass that you are intending to break. its an odd science

someone did it just voice on mythbusters...anybody can do it with amplification, but it requires skill to do it..so the myth was confirmed.

I just saw it done on myth busters the other day. They claimed it was the first video proof that an unamplified human voice could shatter glass.

i think everything has a resonance..... its just a matter of being able to practically reproduce the required frequency and amplitude...

I heard that if you rub the top of the glass and record the sound then play it back at a higher volume it will shatter also.

Possible myth:

You can pop open a chicken skull with a constant 5Mhz frequency. BTW, that's the frequency at which a chicken head resonates.

Lets put it this way, any solid object has a resonating frequency. This is how resonating works and how my old science teacher explained/demonstrated it.

Take a ball tied to a rope which is tied to a pole. Now tie the exact same thing on the other end of that pole. So you have 2 balls tied to opposite ends of a pole and dangling down. No start swinging 1 ball, it doesn't matter which. The energy of the swing will transfer into the pole as vibration. When that vibration frequency reaches the proper resonating frequency, the pole will vibrate exactly as the original ball does and transfer that vibration down it's entire length which will in turn transfer that vibration and energy to the other ball hanging down the opposite end of the pole. Eventually that ball will start swinging a little bit as well.

The only problem is that the first ball will run out of energy eventually from swinging and so the second ball will stop, but ifyou keep pumping more energy in, it will keep the second ball swinging too if you found the right frequency to swing the first ball at constantly.

Get it? Well sound is nothing more then air vibration and energy. EVERYTHING vibrates and finding the right frequency to cause that object to keep vibrating and building energy can eventually break that object. Using ones own voice to break glass in this manner can be and has been done. However, IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO DO. Why? cause a different glass of a differently shape, size, consistancy, and what not is going to have a different resonating frequency. The resonating frequency is the frequency at which the glass conducts the energy vibration instead of trying to absorb the vibration.

BTW, if you know the resonating frequency at which a human skull pops.. you could do some really mean things to people with sound alone. And NO, I'm not going to give out that info.

The guest singer (I can't recall his name) was able to do it unamplified after trying and failing on about 20 different glasses I believe.

Didn't Nikola Tesla say he knew the resonating frequency of the earth and he could destroy it on a whim?

LOL. I like how you are "witholding" this valuable information from us and the first sentence in your post is about how you can pop open a chicken skull with the right frequency. It doesn't take much to figure out what you can do with human skull.

yes, its possible. VERY VERY difficult however. in physics AP this year, we saw a video about this topic while we were studyng resonance/sound waves. apparently, you need to match the natural frequency of the glass very very precisely (which is extremely difficult) and have enough amplitude in the sound so that there is enough energy for the glass to vibrate violently enough to shatter. they said its possible, but very difficult (for people to do).

I'm not withholding it because I am being snotty or want to. it's cause if I posted that info it can send me to JAIL. No if's, and's, or but's about it. Straight to jail.
