Question Is it possible for my HDD to have more capacity than my motherboard supports?

I'm building myself a custom PC and I'm curious if my HDD could end up having too much capacity for my motherboard to handle. If it has too much for my motherboard will it be negatively effected?

Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer: Generally depends on the age and era of your motherboard.

Is this for a "retro" build? If not, it's generally not an issue these days.
