I scheduled an appointment next week to see if I qualify for Lasik surgery but I have a few questions for people who have gone through this operation.

1) My eyesight without glasses is 20/600 in both eyes (No typo there ;) )

2) Slight stigmatism in right eye

3) With Glasses my eyesight can be corrected to 20/20

4) I have to get glasses every 2 years does this mean I will have to get laser touchups that frequently also?

5) Average price of the surgery and recovery time.

6) Touchups how much do they cost?

TIA

i thought when they do the surgery the actually have the light that somes into your eye touch the optic nerve exactly and it permanently stays that way (as opposed to faulty eyesight where light coming into your eye either reaches too far behind the optic nerve or doesnt touch it at all)...

"In LASIK surgery, precise and controlled removal of corneal tissue by a special laser reshapes the cornea changing its focusing power."

Guess I was right, somewhat :)
They correct the way the light focuses into your eye so your focal point is exactly where the optic nerve is (or pretty darn close) so your vision is improved.
I have heard that the 24 hours after feel like you have sand in your eyes and can be quite uncomfortable...
Good luck!

Depends. Lasik doesn't work for everybody. Your questions are best answered by a professional consultant at the Lasik clinic. But here's something my friend wrote me, the cost was around $4K I believe.

when i picked him up in manhattan this a.m., he left wearing these plastic things 2 cover his eyes ~ really in kinda shape like spiderman's eyes, lol.
then he hadda wear dark glasses o'er them. they told us not 2 take subway home, coz o' all the jarrin' movement, and they don't want the part of his eyes they peeled back to become unsuctioned! jc,,, // he's got 3 sets o' eyedrops = 2 o' them he needs to be dosed w/ every hr on the hr; the other, once every 4 hours.
once home, he has had 2 keep his eye shut the whole time ~ 'xcept, natch, when goin' 2 tinkle or eatin'.
he's gotta wear the "spidey" plastic thingys until 2morrow a.m.. then 4 next 5 days, he only has to wear @ nite-time { not durin' day }, so that he doesn't accidently touch his eyes in his sleep by mistake.

Damn - 20/600 doesn't sound like things could get much worse....;)

Avg. recover time - my brother was only down a day with a recovery < 1 week. he ended up with 20/10 after correcting astigmatism. The other steps put him down less than a day and were a few weeks apart.

He went through a multi-session procedure - not sure if he'll need "touchups" now and then - the dr. didn't mention it....

His surgery was about $1800 - but he had the multi-step (forget the type of laser) procedure. I might add there are at least 5 different "methods" or lasers besides laisic. I've seen it as low as $299 an eye but I think thats a loss leader and I'd be scared of getting discount laser surgery....:Q

I had wavefront LASIK two weeks ago. It cost me $4600. I was back to work the next day, and seeing for the most part fine. There are some uncomfortable times, and your eyes are sensitive, but it gets better every day. Now just over two weeks, and my eyes feel pretty good. They can get dry from time to time, but they feel really good today. I had trouble with night halos on lights, especially the first week, but they are going away. They said after a month, they would likely be gone.

Oh, and any corrections are included in the price at the place I had it done. That varies by doctor though.

20/600 is -5.0 diopters roughly. Not that bad actually, you should talk to a good eye doctor to see if you can be a LASIK candidate. My vision is -7.5 diopters (roughly 20/1000) and I have been told that I could do LASIK (still scares me though  ).

Somehow I doubt that. The optic nerve is an external structure behind the eye.

My son had -8 diopters in both eyes but no astigmatism. He paid $500 per eye, had it done in the afternoon and drove the 3 hours home the next day with no problems. He had some problems at times with dry eyes, but that has passed. Surgery was several years ago and his eyesight is 20/20 and has required no touchups .

Good luck!

If I were you the only thing I would worry about is the changing glasses every two years thing. Are you changing glasses or prescriptions? A good doctor will want you to have a steady prescription for at least a year. They don't want your eyes to change after the surgery. Or at least not much.

I just passed my 3 month mark since my surgery. Paid $3500. No pain, but the actual proceedure is uncomfortable. I had a high astigmatism in both eyes. I doubt your prescription should be a problem....as long as it's stable. Recovery time was about 2 days. I just wanted to stay home and relax. You can actually see and function in this time...I just didn't want to. My doctor says that I should be putting the wetting drops in every day for the first year. At first it was easy because I needed them for the dry eyes, but now I forget because my eyes aren't dry anymore.

As far as I know you'll know if you'll need touchups fairly quickly. Like within the first 6 months. If everything is fine past that point then you should be free and clear till old age.

You dont wear contacts, dont have severe astigmatism, and can be corrected to 20/20. The only reason you might be a bad candidate is that your vision still deteriorates, some opthomologists wont touch that with a 10ft pole.

Id see what the consultants have to say.
