Is It Possible For An ATM To Keep Your Card?

I realized after inserting my debit card into my bank's ATM that the card had expired last month. When I tried to withdraw money, it said "Transaction Denied". Then the ATM didn't return my card.

Has this happened to anyone else before? I was worried that the ATM might inadvertently return my card to the next person who uses it, who might start withdrawing my cash.

If it gave it to the next customer, then they couldn't do anything with it either, since it's expired and no longer useable, as you found out.

The government took your card after labelling you as a terrorist for being an immigrant. Now if you were an 80 year old lady, that wouldn't have happened, but that's the way it goes.

Once it is sucked in you have to go inside the bank to get it back. There is no other way around it.

Yeah, similar thing happened to me.

The magnetic strip was going on my card and when I tried to get some money out of an ATM it refused and then kept my card.

The ATM I used was a different bank to who I have my account with and when I went inside to try and get my card back they told me they weren't going to give it to me and that I had to contact my bank to get a replacement.

The ATM card doubles up as a VISA debit card. I thought the expiry date on there just pertained to the VISA, and that I could still continue withdrawing my cash from my checking out even after that date had expired.

Also, if you ever leave your card in the machine, it gives so many seconds before it sucks it back in to the card stack. ;)

Yes. I use to work at a bank and if you enter your pin number incorrectly 3 times, it will not return your card. If you insert an expired card, it will not return your card. You must either walk into the bank or if its not near a bank then you will have to call your bank.

Yea, I didn't even know it was possible for ATMs to keep the cards until last year, when my friends roommate (who was down here from Vegas) forgot to take his out of the machine. He realized it just fast enough to turn around and see it sucked into the machine....on a Saturday night. He had to wait another week to get a replacement card.

yeah. if you enter the PIN number incorrectly too many times, it will suck up the card.

yeah it can do that.

why would you ask whether this was 'possible' when it already happened?

Yes, it can take your card. And no, no one will be able to use your card. I'm pretty sure it either shreads it up or it deposits it into some place where the bank will take care of it.

For the record, it's also possible for the machine to print out a receipt that says "Fvck you and your weeny-a$$ account". :p

I drove away from an atm having left my card in it (in my defense, humble as it is, the menus were very different) and it pulled it into the machine and then I called the bank, had it cancelled, got a new one. It's a "feature".

that happened to me once.. i had a busy day and wasnt thinking correctly while i was withdrawing funds from an atm and after getting my cash, i quickly sped off to catch the bus that stopped nearby and forgot to grab my atm card! (stupid me)

Lucky there was no one behind me in line that could have grabbed my card and kept it or whatever. But what happend was that the atm machine after so many seconds of having my card in the slot and me not taking it, it took it back in and i had to order a new card.

I had to wait almost 2 weeks for it and i use my card like cash almost every day.. what a pain

Yep. I think all ATM's suck in your card if you don't take it after so many seconds or something. Good thing I only forgot it at the atm outside my bank, so they gave me a it back right there.
