Is it possible for a Windows XP home installation cd to be defective?

I tried to do a repair install, and it simply errored, telling me that a .dll couldn't be installed, giving me a version of windows that couldn't work. So I reinstalled, and the first few times it errored, saying that the disc image could not be written.

I've had constant .dll errors that were all supposedly attributed to various causes. I've also had blue screens that were supposedly attributed to RAM. I've swapped out the RAM and the PSU, but nothing works.

Is there a chance that my installation cd is/was defective?

Certainly possible, but there is some checking of the files copied against a manifest to ensure this doesn't happen. From what your describing, I'd keep looking at other hardware issues.

It once took me forver to debug a bad IDE cable. It was slightly broken and would intermittently corrupt data, that definately did not make the OS happy.

Chances are extremely slim... but it's possible.
