Is it possible for a router to be slowed down via packet overload?

I'm connected to my home PC via Remote Desktop, and I've noticed a big lag despite the fact that I'm nowhere near my bandwith limits for upload / download. However, I am running Direct Connect and have about 100+ active connections (although usage is ~150kB/sec / 40kB/sec), not to mention IRC / Kazaa.

I also noticed a big lag when trying to make outgoing page requests from any computer on the network.

I ran a traceroute and there's a 2400ms+ lag from internal IP to cable modem's exteranl IP. :frown: So basically, I assume it's the router / cable modem's inability to handle so many active connections that's causing the lag?

Yes, the more packets a router moves the slower it is. I suspect the high number connections and large NAT table are causing you trouble along with sheer packets/per second.

A higher line or more professional oriented firewall/router would have no trouble at speeds up to 10 Mbs and higher.

A. Are you using A hub or a switch for these workstations?
B. How many workstations are on your connection?
C. Is it your office that is slow or your home?
