Is it possible for a defective motherboard to damage (fry?) a CPU???

yep, the motherboard can give out an electrical charge - hence it could do the same effect if you hooked up your cpu to a 12 volt battery.

If the defect causes the wrong core voltage to be applied to the CPU, it can be "fried."
